Henry Hikes to Fitchburg by D.B. Johnson

My daughter picked this one up at random and I was pleasantly surprised to be regaled by a story that talks about why sometimes its more enriching to take the slow path, and used the path concepts:

1. Subtracting, counting down double digits by using distance
2. Adding upwards in 5 and 10s by using money

This was an exceptional book.

How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin by Margaret Mcnamara

A more obvious, but still endearing, math book, it follows the story of the shortest boy in the class as they try to estimate how many seeds will be in their small, medium and large pumpkin and which will have the most.

2. Big numbers

The Very Hungry Catepillar by Eric Carle

Why not use this familiar book to do a little addition or graphing? You could make a graph with each day of the week and add onto it what he ate. Which day did he eat the most? How many things did he eat all together. How many holes are in the book?

1. Counting

1. Counting by 2s (pre-algebra)
2. Even numbers

Math-terpieces, the Art of Problem-Solving by Greg Paprocki

Clever, if a little pretentious, a book that combines the disciplines of art, simple rhyming poetry, and addition. You have to find two groups of objects, which are inspired by a painting by a famous artist such as Degas or Picasso, to make a particular number.

1. Addition Foundations

2. Numbersense

How Do You Count a Dozen Ducklings by In Seon Chae, with illustrations by Seung Ha Rew
Found in the fiction section of the children's library was this little math gem about a momma duck trying to keep track of her 12 ducklings. It explores the precursors of division and multiplication through grouping, along with counting by multiples. A good transition storybook from counting by mutliples to multiplication.
